Stress and aging shorten your telomeres -- the part of your DNA which protects the end of the chromosome from deterioration. Think of them as shoelaces with banded plastic ends. Sometimes the plastic ends break off and the shoelace starts to unravel. Have you ever tried to work that shoelace through the hole in your shoes to lace them up? It’s really frustrating!

It’s no news that exercise relieves stress. However, new research shows that you can counter stress and its harmful effects with vigorous exercise -- and that’s not easy. You WILL have to push yourself. The good news is that the harder you exercise the less time you need to do it. The benefit: a shorter, more intense workout takes less of your precious time and results in less joint wear and a better quality of life.
By exercising vigorously you send anabolic or “health promoting” messages into the cells -- therefore slowing down the loss and shortening of these telomeres. Wow!!!! What miraculous machines our bodies are!

So, don’t be defeated by the notion that you have to exercise one hour per day, five days a week. Instead, simply focus on just five minutes of intense exercise three days per week. You’ll never have problems lacing your shoes!
